NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL STARTS IN KUMASI
THE 2017 ANNUAL National Sports Festival kick-started in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti region, on Saturday, 2nd September 2017. The Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority are the architects of the event. The sports festival presents a common platform for the discovery of fresh sports talents for the country. The festival has not been held for the last six years but the NPP administration decided to revive it this year.
In all, 2,500 athletes from the ten regions of the country, are competing for laurels in the week-long event. They would compete in sporting disciplines such as athletics, boxing, para sports, female soccer and handball. The athletes would also contest for honors in table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, badminton and tennis (u-16).
The vice President, Dr. Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia, officially declared the week-long sports festival opened.
In his remarks, Dr. Bawumia admonished the participants to adhere to the rules of the competition.
He said the sports festival presents a golden opportunity for the athletes to showcase their talents.
Dr. Bawumia therefore urged the athletes to uphold fair play, respect and friendship to make the festival grand.
Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, said his ministry reinstated the event, after six years of inactivity, to unearth talents.
Kumasi Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, charged the athletes to be displine so as to go high in their chosen careers.
The GFA President, Lawyer Kwasi Nantakyi and other top people, were present at the Baba Yara Stadium.
