Competing with other nine (9) participating Districts, Dangme East had Five (5) Gold Medals to place firsT beating Accra Metro to the second position with Four (4) Gold Medals in the Festival.
In the Soccer Under 15 Finals, Dangme East (Ada) whipped Accra Metro 1 – 0 to lift the trophy at stake after beating Ga East District 3 – 0 and Adentan Municipal 1 – 0 in the Quarter and Semi-Finals respectively.Accra Metro settled for Silver in the Soccer finals by drawing 0 – 0 with Ga West and winning 1 – 0 against both Ashiaman and Tema Metro.
The three day sports festival which begun on Thursday 8th November and ended on Saturday 10th November, 2012 had as its theme Peace and Unity through Sports for a Better Ghana. In all, over Eight Hundred (800) Athletes and Officiating Officials participated in the 3-day sports fiesta.
The sports disciplines competed in included Soccer (under 15 boys), Athletics, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Netball and Handball.
For the first time in the history of the sports festiva,l all ten (10) Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) under the Greater Accra Region participated. They included; Accra Metro, Tema Metro, Dangme East, Ga West, Ga South, Ashiaman, Ga East, Dangme West , Adentan and LEKMA.
The event was used to unearth new sports talents and also select team of athletes to constitute nucleus teams for the Greater Accra Region in preparation ahead of 2013 National Unity Games.
Many high profile personalities were present at the event; they included; Hon. Alex Teteh Enyo (Member of Parliament for Ada), Ms. Alice Attipoe (Ag. Director General , National Sports Authority) and the District Cheif Executive for Dangme East Hon. Rex Daniel Wusah.
In a speech read on his behalf, the Hon. Greater Accra Regional Minister (Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo) praised the Greater Accra Regional Sports Authority for ensuring the participation of all MMDAs for the first time, guaranteeing broad based sports talent hunt and representative final regional nucleus teams in preparation for the 2013 National Unity Games.
Hon. Afotey Agbo pledged the continued support of Government and the RCC towards sports promotion and development in Ghana and Greater Accra in particular. He however bemoaned the general retrogression of most sporting disciplines aside soccer, nation-wide, and called for massive re-organization of these sports to reverse the trend.
The Regional Minister requested all Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to seek peace before, during and after the upcoming elections.
On her part, the Ag. Director General of the National Sports Authority; Ms. Alice Attipoe commended the Planning Committee of the Sports Festival headed by the Regional Sports Director; Mr. Kwame Amponfi Jnr. for successfully committing the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council to fully sponsor such important sports festival. She expressed her gratitude to the Regional minister for his strong desire to finance the promotion and development of sports in his region.
The National Sports Authority boss praised her Accra Regional Sports Director and staff for taking the lead among their compatriots in the 9 other regions to raise teams a year ahead of the 2013 National Unity Games
Ms. Alice Attipoe presented the Government’s better Ghana Sports Agenda which included among others, the pursue of the employment of qualified technical staff to be posted to the Districts as Sports Development Officers to help develop Sports at the grassroots levels and to identify and nature potential talents for the promotion of sports at the national level.
Both the Member of Parliament and District Chief Executive for Ada encouraged the athletes to remain disciplined and take their sports and education seriously for a guaranteed prosperous future.
Mr. Kwame Amponfi Jnr – the Ag. Regional Sports Director for Greater Accra Region, thanked the Hon. Regional Minister (Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo) and his coordinating Director (Mr. Ernest Nyagbe) for their unflinching support both in cash and kind for the success of the event. Mr Amponfi appealed to companies, Members of Parliament in Greater Accra and philanthropists to come on board and support in cash and in kind to help camp the selected regional nucleus teams and to help promote and develop sports in Greater Accra.
The Regional Sports Festival was fully sponsored by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council under the able leadership of Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo.
In addition to being selected into various Nucleus teams of the Region, Athletes and their Districts received very attractive certificates and trophies.
The final results for all the ten (10) MMDAs stood as follows; Dangme East (1st ) Accra Metro (2nd) Ashiaman (3rd ) Adentan (4th ) Tema Metro (5th) Ga West (6th ) Dangme West (7th ) Ga East (8th ) LEKMA (9th ) and Ga South (10th ).
