Hockey Association honours Veterans

Veterans Hockey Club (VHC) with support from the Greater Accra Regional hockey Association celebrated two of their renowned players with a testimonial match at the National Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

The testimonial match is a ritual performed for members of the hockey fraternity who attains the age of 60 years.

This year’s celebrants were Mr. Dennis Amoa Ababio known in the fraternity as ‘Dracula’ (27th April) and Mr. Clement Entsua-Mensah also known as ‘Thorax’ (6th July).

The match was played between Veterans and Citizens and ended 2-1 in favor of Citizens. In an interview with the celebrants, they expressed their appreciation to the organisers for coming up with such an initiative and applauded their efforts.

They advised the upcoming youth to focus on both their education and the game since the two works hand in hand. They also pledged their continous commitment to the development of the game and assured to serve as role models for the younger generations.

According to the organiser, Mr. Kenneth Johnfia, he noted that in October 2003, Thorax and one Eric Okai brought up the idea of honoring deserving members of the fraternity who attains the retiring age of 60 years.

He said the two were not daunted by the club’s lack of funding at that time and encouraged individual members of the club to donate generously in aid of the project.

Kwaku Fordjour, Kwesi Acheampong and Kenneth Johnfia were the first to be honored in the initial stage. In 2006, Eric Okai was also celebrated.

In 2007, Kwame Saara-Mensah, Kwadwo Owusu, Kwaku Awua-Nyamekye and Martey Commodore-Mensah also took their turn. Ekow Sam, Nii Akwei Ankrah, B.T Baba, Kwaku Brem-Larbi and S.K Dapaah were also celebrated in 2008 while Andy Sam also took his turn in 2010.
