Weightlifting; Ghana Out Due To Injury

Ghana’s Dora Afi missed the opportunity of securing 3 silver medals for Ghana in weightlifting after sustaining an injury in the right elbow during her 2nd snatch attempt.

The Ghanaian medal hopeful first snatch of 83kg automatically placed her in the 3rd position for a bronze medal; however since she could not execute any lifts in both the snatch and the jerk after her injury thus she had no total points hence out of the competition.

Also, Christian Amoah the youngest athlete in the weightlifting team and the youngest in the 85kg put up an amazing performance to improve his personal best from a snatch of 110kg, a jerk of 155kg respectively here in Congo. This moves his total from 238kg to 285kg, an increase of 47kg within a year. However the impressive performance fell below those of the Egyptian, Algerian, Libyan, Nigerian and Cameroonian lifters who are more experience and better exposed.

Similarly, Ruth  Baffoe would have won 3 bronze medals in the 53kg body weight category but for the bad decision of the referee in favour of the weightlifter from Mauritius, an obvious press out in the right arm which is a foul was adjudged a good one hence the young weightlifter place 4th in the overall standings. The Competition continues tomorrow at the Onam Gym in Congo Brazzaville.
