Commonwealth bronze for Gaisah

Ghana’s long jumper Ignatius Gaisah last Saturday failed to defend the gold medal he won at the 2006 2006 Common wealth Games.

Gaisah who was making a return to high-profile international competition after almost three years of nursing an injury, however, was compensated with a bronze medal after leaping his season’s best of 8.12 in the final of the long jump event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Australia’s Fabrice Pierre, who has been in a very impressive from the season, leaped his way to gold with a leap of 8.30m and was closely followed by Greg Therford of England who jumped 8.22m to win the silver.

 


Anita Forjour won Ghana’s first bronze medal para 1500m race last Friday.Meanwhile, one of Ghana’s medal hopefuls, Margaret Simpson, was rushed to hospital last Saturday after picking an injury during the final stages of her heptathlon event.

 


She limped off during her fifth jump in the long jump segment which until the injury was second in the ratings. Maggie was unable to recover to finish the seven-discipline event and subsequently missed out on picking a medal.At the time of going to press last night, heavyweight boxer, Awusone Yekini had qualified for the semi-final stage of the competition.
