Black Queens To Play Bayana Bayana

Ghana’s female senior football team, the Black Queens, and their South African counterparts, Bayana Bayana, are scheduled to engage each other in a two-leg international friendly as part of the South African Football Association’s plan to whip up awareness of the June World Cup.

The friendly is one of several programmes lined up by “Africa Awake” an NGO with its headquarters in Ghana, aimed at promoting African culture during the mundial to make Africans aware and interested in the first ever football World Cup in the continent.

The Black Queens are expected to travel to Johannesburg in the first week of next month for the first leg while the South Africans will reciprocate the gesture in Accra a week later.

Mr. David Dontoh, Executive chairman of Africa Awake, told the Daily Graphic yesterday that as part of the plans, Ghana is to shepherd a 500-man continent of artistes and cultural performances from the five qualified countries for a ‘kick-off’ concert on the eve of the world cup, while some top Ghanaian hip-life artistes have been penciled in to perform at the June 11 opening ceremony at the Orlando Pirate Stadium in south Africa.

The concert, which has been endorsed by FIFA and the South Africa Football Association, follows an initial proposal by SAFA that 80 per cent of artistes during the World Cup should come from Africa.

SAFA believes that the initial plan by Electronic giants, Sony, to flood the World Cup venues with foreign artistes could kill interest in the tournament and lower attendance at the stadia.
Sequel to that, SAFA and FIFA agreed yesterday to allow African performers to dominate the show at the World Cup.

In connection with that, Mr, Kwame Wadada , the International Relations Officer of Africa Awake, the initiator of the concept and whose :True Freedom Organization” gave birth to Africa Awake is touring the ;five qualified countries as well as Benin to get the artistes in those countries ready for the show.
