Ghana - Nigeria Amateur Boxing Joint Training Camp Launched

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Council, Mr. Wolanyo K. Agra on Wednesday 7th April launched the maiden Ghana – Nigeria Amateur Boxing Joint Training Camp at the D. G. Hathiramani Sports Hall of the Ohene-Djan Sports Stadium in Accra.

The joint training camp is the initiative of Mr. Ray Quarcoo, the President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association and his Nigerian counterpart Mr. Olu Warotimi G. Tailor.

The one week exercise which originally begun on Easter Sunday 4th April, 2010, is aimed at preparing the Youth Boxing teams of the two nations for the pending Youth Olympic Qualification Championship scheduled for Baku, Azerbaijan from April 20 to May 2, 2010.

At the launching Mr. Agra Commended the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) and the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) for the initiative and promised the Sports Council and the Sports Ministry’s support for future West African Amateur Boxing Training Camp in Accra–Ghana.

He admonished boxers and technical handlers from both nations to be dedicated to their training for eventual qualification to the Youth Olympics to be held in August 2010 in Singapore.

Mr. Agra intimated that plans were far advanced for the construction of a new multipurpose Sports Hall in Accra and so appealed to companies and philanthropists to assist the Council and the Sports Ministry to have the Hall promptly constructed.

The Chairman of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association, Mr. Ray Quarcoo in his Welcome Address, outlined a number of programmes that GABA has put in place to rejuvenate the Sport in Ghana.

He commended the Sports Council and the Sports Ministry for their support since assumption of office.

Mr. Oluwarotimi praised the Ghanaian hospitality accorded his Nigerian contingent and promised a reciprocal programme in Nigeria before the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He however bemoaned the dwindling fortunes of African teams since the introduction of computer scoring systems in World Amateur Boxing.

The Nigerian Boxing Federation president called for a joint African initiative to attract technical and financial support from the advanced Amateur Boxing Nations and the International Amateur Boxing Federation (AIBA) to grow the sport in Africa.

Ghana’s Team Manager in the joint exercise and the Secretary General of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association, Mr. Kwame Amponfi Junior added his voice to the call for a more united African Technical Amateur Boxing training to speed up the growth of the sport in member nations and to dislodge the emerging dwindling fortunes of African Teams.

The last sparring and closing ceremony of the joint exercise is scheduled for Friday, April 9th, 2010 from 10:30am-1:30pm at the D.G Hathiramani Sports Hall of the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra-Ghana.

Ghana’s Minister for Youth and sports is expected to grace the occasion among other dignitaries.
