WOSPAG Partners The Media And Seeks For More Attention

The Women Sports Association of Ghana (WOSPAG) has called for more attention and publicity from the Ghanaian media (Print and electronic) in the quest of promoting and engaging more female into sports participation and its associated activities such as sports administration and sports for excellence.

This was made known at a forum organized by the Association under the theme “Encouraging, promoting, enhancing and supporting events of women in sport” at the Media center, Ohene Djan Sports Stadium on Thursday 25th March, 2010.

In attendance was the Hon. Deputy of Youth and Sports, Nii Nortey Dua, the Secretary General of SWAG, Williams Ezah, Chairperson of the WOSPAG, Dr. Deborah Cubagee, the Deputy Chief Sports Development Officer of the National Sports Council, Mr. Ohene Karikari, Secretaries General of other Sports Associations, Executive Members of the WOSPAG and some women groups.

The Chairperson of WOSPAG, Dr. Deborah Cubagee who made a presentation under the theme, called for optimum support and collaboration from the media to successfully implement the vision, mission and objectives of the WOSPAG. She stated that, women’s sports activities has been given little or no attention and needs to be revived.

She elaborated the WOSPAG’s mission which “simply seeks to advise a policy to be deployed that would eliminate all elements that hinders women’s free and full participation in sports; ensure equity and  equality , motivate more women to get into sports and facilitate equitable admission of women into high levels of sports administration by the year 2020”. In that regard, she congratulated the Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports, Akua Sena Dansua for the historical ascendance onto the highest office as Ghana’s first female Minister of Youth and sports.

In a speech read on behalf of the Hon Minister, Hon Nii Nortey Dua, a sports journalist himself, commended the WOSPAG for the initiative and pledged the Ministry’s support in developing women sports. He added that, the media should offer equal mileage for women’s activities. He however entreated the WOSPAG to work unremittingly to achieve its objectives.

In his closing remarks, the Deputy Chief Sports Development Officer of the National Sports Council, Mr. Ohene Karikari, who chaired the function on behalf of the Chief Executive, believed that, the message has sunk well into the Journalists. He indeed commended all participants and pleaded, they propagate the message.

The Executives of WOSPAG is earnestly grateful to all participants, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and more especially, the National Sports Council for sponsoring the programme.

Williams Kyei
