Report on launching of Independence Anniversary Netball tournament, 4th march, 2010

The Independence Anniversary Netball Tournament being organized by the Netball Association of Ghana was launched at the Media Centre, Ohene Djan Sports Stadium on Thursday, 4th March, 2010.

The tournament takes place at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, Kaneshie and involves eight sub-metro school teams and four clubs, namely, 


  • GOLDEN POD LADIES all of Accra.


In attendance were the Chief Executive of the National Sports Council, Mr. Wolanyo Agra, who was the Guest of Honor and Guest Speaker, the Chairman of the Netball Association, Rev. E.D. Nikoi, Mr. Neil Armstrong Motargbe of Krypton Ghana Ltd., (Fund Raising Agents of Netball Association of Ghana), Prof. Docea Fianu of the Home Science Department of the University of Ghana who was a member of the Accademicans and National Netball  team in the 1960’s as well as a large number of  the Netball fraternity.



In an address, Mr. Agra reiterated the commitment of government to its avowed determination to provide infrastructure and a conducive atmosphere for the development of the so called lesser-known sports disciplines. He said the government will provide the requisite platform to Netball Association of Ghana to successfully host the West Africa (ECOWAS) Netball Tournament which is scheduled for Accra from the 29th to 30th May, 2010.


Mr. Agra urged the Netball Association of Ghana to pursue good programmes to enable it host and win the tournament.



The Chairman of the Netball Association of Ghana, Rev. E.D. Nikoi said the Association is determined that Ghana qualifies for the All Africa Games Netball event next year and also qualify to the World Netball Championship in Singapore in 2010 at the Africa Cup of Nations Netball Tournament in Namibia or Zambia this year.



Mr. Neil Armstrong Motangbe assured the Netball Association/Fraternity of his company to assist the Association of Ghana to develop the game in the country.



Prof. Fianu on her part advised the current generation of Netball players to let discipline and hard work be their watch word as they intend to become stars. She said she loves Netball and played it with all her heart so she was able to give off her best and asked the young players to emulate that attitude.



Prof. Fianu said she was ready to do all within her power to enforce the game of Netball in the Country.
