Hockey: Tough Friendlies for U-18

GHANA'S male under-18 hockey team step up their preparation for the AfHF IOC First Youth Olympic Games qualifying tournament in East London, Durban, South Africa later this month with two key friendly matches against Exchequers and Trustees.

After naming the final squad for the tournament, the handlers of the national team want to use the two matches and perhaps another two next weeks to fine-tune and to settle on the starting line-up.

Exchequers of the Bank of Ghana returned to Accra after an off-season training tour of Takoradi to test their readiness for the next league season which pushes of on March 6.

The defending champions of the Chairman's challenge will play without key defender Alfred Ntiamoah who is one of the main characters of the under-18 squad.

The match, scheduled for the National Bee key Pitch on Wednesday evening, is expected to parade the best of the two sides, which will be crucial in assessing their teams before their task ahead.

That big match will be preceded by another crunch game against Trustees tonight at the same venue.

The exciting Trustees who won bronze at the Chairman's Challenge Cup is also expected to give the young boys a good run for their money.

Plans are afoot to play CEPS and other select sides before the under-18 team leaves on February 17 while the ladies could play Fire, Reformers and CEPS before they leave.
