Ashanti Region Battle Ready for National Unity Games

Ashanti region has drawn up a detailed talent-hunting programme that will make them the team to beat in the upcoming National Unity Games scheduled to take place in Accra from 17th -27th July, 2011.


According to Mr. Francis Kpesenu, the Regional Director of Sports, all Stakeholders in the region including Dr. Opoku Agyeman, the Regional Minister are so excited about the revival of the National sports festival that no stone is being left unturned to present formidable teams in the various sporting disciplines.


He revealed that as a strategy to unearth hidden talents, Ashanti Region has been divided into 9 sub zones where competitions will be held.


On June 15, 2011, Obuasi Municipal, Adansi North and South will meet at Obuasi, whilst Bekwai Municipal, Amansie West and East assemble at Bekwai the following day.


On June 17, 2011, it will be the turn of Atwima Kwanwoma, Ahafo Ano North and South to compete whilst Mampong hosts Ejura Sekyere-Dumase and Sekyere Central on June 21, 2011.


On 22nd June, 2011, Efigyase will welcome Sekyere East, Afram plains and Sekyere South whilst offinso will be the venue for teams from ofinso South, Afigya Sekyere and Offinso North the next day. On 30th June 2011, Bosontwi will welcome their counterparts from Atwima Nwabiagya and Atwima Mponua.


Ashanti Region will present teams in Athletics, Table Tennis, Colts Soccer, Volleyball, Badminton, Boxing, Chess, Disable Sports, Basketball and Hockey. Others are Judo, Cycling, Newtball, Karate-Do, Swimming, Tennis, Taekwondo, Handball and weightlifting.
