In 1985, during the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, (G.B.C )Rev Emmanuel D. Nikoi, who was the then a chief Editor of (NEWS), in the Radio News room of the corporation, suggested to the GOLDEN JUBILLEE PLANNING COMMITTEE holding of a Netball tournament as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebration.
This suggestion was accepted and G.B.C wrote to various institutions to form Netball teams to participate In the G.B.C Golden Jubilee Netball tournament. At G.B.C Itself under the guidance of the Rev. Nikoi founded the G.B.C GOLDEN HANDS Netball team to rub shoulders with the other institutions to take part in the GOLDEN JUBILEE Netball tournament.
Institutions which responded to the invitation including GIHOC Distilleries, State Insurance Company, SIC Department of National lotteries, now National lotteries Authority, Psychiatric Hospital, Nungua classmates union, Agricultural Development Bank and Bank of Ghana. The others are Ghana Commercial Bank, Standard Chartered, Barclays Bank and State Publishing Corporation.
The Agricultural Development Bank Netball team won the finals of the G.B.C GOLDEN JUBILEE Netball tournament played at the then Accra Sports Stadium beating the GBC Netball team Golden Hands by 9 goals to 6. After the GBC Golden Jubilee celebration, GBC did not dissolve its Netball team.
The GBC Netball team under took a tour of the country between 1985 -1988 by organizing Netball workshops and forming Netball teams across the country which lead to the formation of netball teams such as the suhum Ladies Netball club made up of young teachers in the Suhum municipalities, netball teams sprung up in the cocoa industry – cocoa board, cocoa service division, quatity control, division and Buaso cocoa college.
Teams were also formed in the communities such as the Teshie Estate preparatory school Netball team. The Kristo Asafo Mission under Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo took up the promotion of Netball seriously and teams were formed in all branches of the church throughout the country.
In 1987and early 1988, the genesis of the Netball Association of Ghana started with the organization of a Homowo Netball Tournament at the Accra sports stadium in which 8 teams took part, it was sponsored by the late Nii Kwakuronya, La mantse. This tournament which was organized by the chairman of the Netball Association of Ghana attracted the attention of the 31st December women’s movement which in collaboration with the Netball Association organized a netball tournament to mark its anniversary at the Accra sports stadium.
The golden hands of GBC beat the 31st December women movement netball team by 9 goals to 8 in the final match to lift the trophy. The then first lady mrs Konadu Agyemang Rawling personally presented the trophy and other prizes to the champion and runners –up.
This tournament served as the catalyst for the formation of the Netball Association of Ghana. The GBC teamed up with the SIC to set up the structures of the Association, this move received much support from the Greater Accra Regional Sports Organizer of the National Sports Council, Mr. Seth Annang Botchey between the late 1985 – 1989,from then on at then Rev. Emmauel Nikoi continued to hold and works up to spread the game of netball throughout the length and breath of Ghana, workshops were held in all the regions to teach the game of Netball to sports teachers, coaches and other interested persons and also organizing tournaments to keep alive the revival of Netball in Ghana.
In the early 1990 the National Sports Council, then headed by group captain Ben Cole as chief executive formally recognized Netball as a National Sports Association under the auspices of the National Sports Council.
